Youth wellbeing Project
In December 2023, the Hillcrest Affected Area Recovery Committee engaged the Mental Health Council of Tasmania to develop a youth-led, youth-focussed, community-based mental health and wellbeing project for young people (aged 14-24) in the Devonport Area.
The project aims to:
- Get young people involved in raising awareness amongst their peers, family, and community on what positive mental health looks like and how to maintain it.
- Encourage safe, supportive conversations about positive mental health and wellbeing, using positive language and reducing stigma.
- Give young people access to relevant training and support to be involved. This will build additional self-care skills and understanding in those interested in taking on a leadership role with their peers.
- Promote the supports and services that are available when people need help with their mental health.
A project officer has been employed by the Devonport City Council, work started on the project in May 2024.
Next steps:
- The Devonport City Council will promote the project so that people can get involved.
Community Recovery Forum
In October 2022, the Hillcrest Affected Area Recovery Committee conducted a Community Recovery Survey to hear from the community the recovery supports they needed.
From this survey, it was identified there was a need for more education around understanding grief and trauma.
In November 2022, the Hillcrest Affected Area Recovery Committee engaged Dr Rob Gordon to present to the community on the topic of "Understanding traumatic grief and the recovery journey".
Dr Gordon's forum is available to watch on vimeo.
